U.S. 2 to Gentian Pond Shelter
11.8 Miles
We were pleasantly surprised by the very easy and nice trail
to start the day. There were just a few
spots where we had to do our stretching, the ups and downs were short,
gradually climbing higher. It was cloudy
and pleasant temperature in the morning, and it was especially nice to be hiking
without mosquitoes.
About noon it started raining pretty hard. We got drenched and the path was very
muddy. I slipped in the mud, fell down and
my trekking pole got stuck in the mud as I went down and it bent under the
load. Actually we both slipped down
several times and fell down either on wet roots or in the mud.
We got to Gentian Pond Shelter about 5:00 hoping it
would be empty. No way.
Three other people were there already with their stuff hanging all over
the place. They were on the top
platform, so we settle down underneath on the bottom floor. We hunkered down under there to change out of
our wet clothes. We were definitely cold,
and it was still raining so no way were we going to set up our tent.
Unfortunately, we probably should have. About the time we were all about to call it a
night, another young man came in and we had to move things around again to try
to give him some room to hang stuff up.
He was not to friendly a chap and obviously didn’t want to carry on a
conversation, so the rest of us quickly left him to himself.
There were wet clothes hanging everywhere but none of them
dried overnight.
