Madison Spring Hut to Pinkham Notch
7.8 miles
We left the Hut at 8:00.
Right away we reached a vertical rock climb. Then we crossed a range of
mountains right on the ridge, including Mt. Madison, where the wind was blowing
wildly. I found out later that the wind
gusts today on Mt. Washington were 70 mph.
We felt it. It was scary—it took
us 2 hours to do 1 mile, having to stop occasionally to hold on while the wind
was gusting.
WOW and another dude passed us up and walked quickly by like
dare-devils while the gusting wind blew them around. WOW’s pack cover was blowing around like a
parachute.
We finally got down below tree line and the wind speed
decreased some but it started to rain for the rest of the day. When we got to the auto road, we walked down
it to the visitor’s center instead of continuing two more miles on the trail to
Pinkham Notch. We were tired of it.
Bruce picked us up and took us back to Top Notch Inn.
