Gentian Pond Shelter to Carlo Col Campsite
5.2 miles
It’s never easy to put on wet clothes on a cool morning, but
we’ve done it many times, today was just another one of those times.
Generally the trail
was more of the same—nothing out of the
ordinary. We climbed the last mountain
in New Hampshire first thing in the morning.
It was a long way up to the top of Mt.
Success. We felt very relieved to
be finishing up New Hampshire. It has
been a beast.
Then we climbed the last ladder in New Hampshire and wet up
to meet the Maine state line. We began
to feel like we were practicing for Mahoosuc Notch with the boulder climbs we
had to do.
On one of these boulder patches, we met boys, Doormat and
Iron Will. They had passed the state
line without taking a picture and were on their way back to get one. They didn’t make it. Doormat had fallen backwards onto a boulder and
knocked his shoulder out of joint. He was
evidently in a lot of pain and was almost in shock. Wait-up worked with him to get his muscles to
relax and let his joint go back into place.
They gave up on their picture and went back to Carlo Col Shelter where
we all spent the night.
It was wonderful to get our tent set up and get into dry
clothes and get warm. We had planned to
go on to Full Goose Shelter tonight, but had had enough of being cold and wet,
so we stopped short.
We made a clothesline
and hung up our clothes hoping they would be somewhat dry in the morning since
it had stopped raining and the wind was
blowing.
