Stealth Camp to Main Road, Tyringham
16. 3 Miles

It rained hard last night but we stayed dry.  We left camp at 7:15 and reached Tom Leonard Shelter at 8:45. Alpine was there. The picnic table, the floor boards and the bed platforms were chewed up pretty badly by some hungry creature. Someone said later it was porcupines. Alpine said he woke up frequently during the night and beat his hiking poles together to run off some kind of creature.

The trail was very wet.  There were numerous boardwalks toward the end of the day, but they didn’t do much good, they didn’t go far enough to get us over the wet spots. The ground around several of the boardwalks was standing in knee-deep water.  The ends of the boardwalks has sunk into the ground, leaving a precarious walking situation where we walked up an incline to the middle of the boards, then down a decline on the other side.  The boards were slippery so it was quite a trick to get across without slipping.  But it was either walk on that, or walk through knee-deep water on the ground.
One of the streams was so deep that we couldn't find stepping stones to walk across on.  We found a fallen tree across it and scooted across on our bottoms, afraid to try to walk across since it was wet and slippery.

Some of the forest looked like we remember Unaka Mountain back in Tennessee, dark and spooky.  As we neared Tyringham Road we began to have some pasture walking, nice and boggy.   Our truck was parked at Tyringham Road, so we are off to town tonight.

We ate dinner at 51 Park Restaurant in Lee on our drive up to Williamstown Motel.  It is a family-owned little motel but has good reviews. The owners were very nice and welcoming; they told us they had only been here a year and  were trying to learn about the area and the trail themselves.  Rita and Ashwan were their names.  The room was small with a queen bed; everything was clean. A cute sign adorned the doors of all the rooms.
